🥦 Calorie Calc/Glossary/NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)

What is NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)?

NEAT, or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, is the energy expended for everything you do that isn't sleeping, eating, or sports-like exercise. It includes walking, typing, fidgeting, gardening, and household chores. NEAT accounts for 15–50% of TDEE and varies by up to 2,000 calories/day between individuals — making it the most variable component of energy expenditure. Increasing NEAT (e.g., standing desk, walking meetings) is often more sustainable than structured exercise for long-term calorie management.
